There are a number of tools you can use to inspect your creation before giving it a shot ingame.
OPT GL is a very useful tool which shows your model using the same shading methods as the game. This is perfect as you can quickly spot any shading errors with the model. Further you can switch between the various LODs and flightgroup colors.
